Psalmfest! An Evening with Bernstein and Rutter
Saturday, October 5, 2019 | 7:30 PM

Join us as we open our season with a celebratory evening of psalms. Beginning with Leonard Bernstein’s exuberant Chichester Psalms sung in Hebrew, the concert also features John Rutter’s Psalmfest, a series joyful settings. The energy of these works, performed with organ and a selection of orchestral instruments, will delight and inspire you!

Gain insights into the lyrics by attending our pre-concert lecture at 7:00 PM. From Rice University’s Department of Religion, HCS welcomes Dr. Matthias Henze, who is the Isla Carroll and Percy E. Turner Professor of Hebrew Bible and Early Judiasm, as well as the Director of Jewish Studies. Learn more here.

A Glorious Christmas

Join us as we ring in the magic of the Christmas season! We’re proud to partner with Libi Lebel and the Texas Medical Center Orchestra in a performance of Francis Poulenc’s celebrated Gloria.

We are also honored to welcome The Clements High School Concert Chorale under the direction of Janet Menzie for a joyous holiday appearance.

Bring the whole family and experience an exciting evening of Christmas favorites and even a special appearance by Santa and Mrs. Claus!

Plan to arrive by 7:00 PM for a pre-concert lecture by Thomas Coker to learn more about the concert’s festive literature. 

Handel’s Messiah

Following last year’s sold out performance, celebrate the season with “Part I” plus the “Hallelujah” from George Frideric Handel’s Messiah. Hear it performed in an intimate setting, featuring our HCS Chamber Choir with chamber orchestra.

The Gospel Spirit

We are proud to present the incredible legacy of African American Spirituals and Gospel music featuring special guests the Prairie View A&M University Concert Chorale. Hear works by William Dawson, Moses Hogan, Rollo Dilworth, Robert Ray, Jeffery Ames, and more. Be prepared to be moved!

Most Large Chorus concerts will begin with a pre-concert lecture 30 minutes prior to the concert and will conclude with a hospitality reception. Please make plans to enjoy both!
